Why public libraries should be for everyone.

Universal access has been a cornerstone of the modern public library system. This means that it is open to all and that every member of the community can access it. This characteristic distinguishes public libraries from other types of libraries such as academic, school or research libraries where the membership and access is limited. This … More Why public libraries should be for everyone.

Denmark’s “My Open Library”–get the facts not the fiction!!

The information currently been promoted in Ireland that there were no closures, no reduction in staffed hours and no job losses associated with the Denmark model of staffless /My Open libraries is false and misleading. As with the LGMA pilot report it is impossible to make an informed decision based on false and misleading information. Decisions that have consequences as far reaching as staffless libraries need to be based on facts not fiction. … More Denmark’s “My Open Library”–get the facts not the fiction!!

Staffed libraries build, support and enrich our communities.

The value that a library brings to a community is well documented and researched internationally but this is not currently being recognised here. Unfortunately, in Ireland the value of public libraries is only measured in quantitative not qualitative outcomes. Staffed libraries build, support and enrich our communities. The time to speak out is now before this community asset is dismantled. … More Staffed libraries build, support and enrich our communities.

I believe staff-less libraries should be boycotted- Rita Ann Higgins

A library is at the centre of any community and it acts in ways we are not always mindful of. If a fraction of the money that is been thrown at this scheme was given to librarians to invest in new books then communities would benefit. Staff-less libraries will lead to many library closures. I believe staff-less libraries should be boycotted.

Staffless Libraries pilot scheme- unmitigated failure or roaring success?

Benjamin Disraeli once said, “There are three kinds of lies: lies, damn lies and statistics”. An analysis of the data in the LGMA report shows how statistics have been skewed and twisted to suit a certain viewpoint. The LGMA is inherently flawed. An independent cost-benefit analysis needs to be undertaken before further resources are misused and misdirected. … More Staffless Libraries pilot scheme- unmitigated failure or roaring success?

Staffless libraries and safety-what could and already did go wrong?

The LGMA report on the pilot project is deliberately misleading with regard to the information it provided on the safety aspects of staffless libraries. Technological means cannot prevent tailgating, allowing access to others or children being left unsupervised in an unstaffed unmonitored building. The introduction of staffless libraries puts members of the public including children in an environment which is inherently unsafe. … More Staffless libraries and safety-what could and already did go wrong?

Opportunities for All… or for the chosen few?

In ‘Opportunities for All’, under the 7 programmes of activity, there were 43 strategic aims and 68 recommended actions in total. Not one of these mentions staffless libraries. To utilise ‘Opportunities for All’ as a basis for introducing staffless libraries is disingenuous to those focus groups that were consulted. Was this document just a … More Opportunities for All… or for the chosen few?

What can we do?

They say the pen is mightier than the sword and therein lies the answer to a question that  has been posed by many a new member of Staff our Libraries-“What can we actually do?”  In this age of digital communication  it has become rare to receive a physical letter.
